This error is caused either by another instance of eXist already
running, or an old instance that was shutdown improperly and left .lck
files in webapp/WEB-INF/data. Did you have a previous installation of
eXist in /Applications/eXist by chance? Assuming you don't/didn't
have any valuable data in that instance of eXist, you might try
clearing the contents of webapp/WEB-INF/data. Stop eXist before this,
and restart afterward. Hope this helps. Let us know.

Cheers,
Joe

Serkan,

Oh, I have another idea. How are you starting eXist? It's important
that you start it from the eXist home directory (which we typically
refer to as EXIST_HOME), rather than from the EXIST_HOME/bin folder.
So:

$ cd /Applications/eXist
$ ./bin/startup.sh

NOT:
$ cd /Applications/eXist/bin
$ ./startup.sh

Similarly, for Windows, if you're starting from the command line, cd
into EXIST_HOME, not into EXIST_HOME/bin. If you set up a desktop
shortcut to startup.bat, make sure the "Start In" field for the
shortcut only goes as deep as EXIST_HOME, not EXIST_HOME/bin.

Does this help?

Joe

Hi Serkan,

Very strange - so it was the installer that couldn't even start eXist
to set the admin password. Hmm. I'm not qualified to read the logs.
If I were you I'd wipe the /Applications/eXist folder and start over.
Start the installer by double-clicking on the jar, not by typing "java
-jar..." I've never had any errors like this installing eXist on my
Mac.

Joe

Serkan,

could you check the logs in webapp/WEB-INF/logs/exist.log and paste
any error messages you find here? It really seems like eXist is
started multiple times.

Hi Wolfganag,

After a short time, i thought abut the regional setting problem of jdk on some capitalization of characters in turkish while dealing with xml things. According to your advice i checked the log and unfortunately i was right.

it is the problem of the capitalization if "i" to "İ".

I faced to same problem twice before,

1. when i was running weblogic on windows with regional settings turkish
2. generating classes from xsd on a windows with regional settings turkish

At last, i solved the problem of starting eXist by adding parameter to vm : -Duser.country=EN -Duser.language=en

eXist is now working but Installation process is still problematic because argument addition did not solve the issue. So am using user admin without password :)

Sorry for taking your time.

Hi Serkan

fortunately the logging showed a vague clue
. Well I thought the dot on the large I was a dead pixel on my screen :-)

It is good to know about this generic issue
.. but it is annoying for sure. Maybe there is a way to have control on this Capitalization thing internally (in Java code), but I'd need to study on that.

cheers

Dannes

Hi everyone,

I'm writing an XQuery-Script generating an XSLT-Node for later
transformation. Now I need to have a <xsl:text> </xsl:text>-Node (the
Whitespace-Contentis the important part here). When trying to generate
this node it always comes back as an empty element <xsl:text />. Is
there a way to preserve the space.
I don't want to change the server configuration
'preserve-whitespace-mixed-content' becuase for all other cases of my
app it is very usefull to not preserve the whitespace.
Any ideas?

Cheers Daniel
